HAT TRICK CRITERIA
This award was started by Ben Hunt in 2002. The following is what he based the Hat Trick Winner on:
The criteria used was the cook has to finish 1st in each category to be a Hat Trick Winner. The recognition belongs ONLY to that person and that person alone. The 2nd place cook does NOT become a Hat Trick Winner just because the 1st place winner can not attend the WCCC. Also, anyone who qualifies for the WCCC by means of the Last Chance cookoff has always qualified for the Hat Trick if they have won already in chili verde and salsa categories. This is the criteria the certificates are based on.
NOTE: Remember this recognition is “unofficial”.
SUMMARY:
There are times when a cook has qualified for the Hat Trick, but for reasons of their own, did NOT participate at the WCCC. Because of this, the cook was NOT qualified to be on the Master or Grand Master Lists for that year.
An example of this was in 2002 a cook qualified for the Hat Trick; however, the cook did NOT participate at the 2002 WCCC. Thus the cook was not eligible to be placed on the Grand Master Traditional Red List or the Master Chili Verde List but the cook did receive a Hat Trick Certificate for 2002.
