The National Onion Association and the International Chili Society Announce Partnership

It’s almost enough to bring tears to your eyes … tears of joy that is. The National Onion Association (NOA) and the International Chili Society (ICS) are a match made in Chilihead heaven.

“Onions and chili have a long-standing relationship,” said Carol Hancock, CEO of ICS. “Almost every bowl of ICS chili contains onion as an ingredient.”

Each year, ICS sanctions over 200 chili cookoffs, culminating at the annual World’s Championship Chili Cookoff.

As an official partner of ICS and the WCCC, the NOA hopes to raise awareness for onions and the industry that grows them. NOA plans to provide on-site onion themed activities, entertainment and education for event attendees at the 2011 WCCC in Manchester, N.H. The event is scheduled for Sept. 30 through Oct. 2, 2011.

“It makes perfect sense to align the NOA with the International Chili Society and the World’s Championship Chili Cookoff,” said Kimberly Reddin, Director of Public and Industry Relations for the NOA. “Our mission is to spread the word about onions and chili is the perfect dish for doing just that.”

Onions are a staple in nearly every American household. On average, Americans consume about 20 pounds of onions per capita each and every year.

Since 1913, the National Onion Association has been spreading the word about onions all across the United States and around the world. As the voice of the onion industry, NOA is comprised of growers, shippers, brokers and commercial representatives of the U.S. onion industry. For more information, visit www.onions-usa.org.

The International Chili Society is an organization that sanctions chili cookoffs with judging and cooking regulations. These events are worldwide and benefit charities or non-profit organizations. In order to compete for the $45,000 in cash prizes and awards at the World’s Championship Chili Cookoff, competitors must be first-place winners of pre-qualifying ICS sanctioned cookoffs held throughout the year.
